Shipping Safety Partnership
After the Selendang Ayu grounding and spill off of Unalaska in December 2004, the ad hoc coalition- The Shipping Safety Partnership (SSP) - was formed to improve shipping safety along primary North Pacific cargo shipping routes, in particular along the "Great Circle Route" through the Aleutian Islands and southern Bering Sea. The group's primary focus is to reduce the risk of groundings, collisions and oil and cargo spills from the several thousand merchant vessels each year that transit waters off Alaska to trade between ports on the west coast of North America and Asia. The Alaska Oceans Program is the administrative house of the SSP and helps coordinate efforts among members, comprised of Alaska Natives, fishermen, conservationists, and scientists across the North Pacific.
