Alaska's oceans are home to an unparalleled diversity of marine life and a rich history of indigenous cultures. The North Pacific contains world-class populations of fish, marine mammals and birds and is responsible for over 50% of the nation's fish landings. It drives the Alaskan economy and ecology. Though it's one of the planet's key marine ecosystems, the North Pacific is one of the least understood. It is also vulnerable to pressures from pollution, climate change, and fishery management policies focused on short-term profit at the expense of the long-term health of Alaska's oceans.
The Network is focusing on federal groundfish fisheries reform. We believe that critical reforms are necessary to reduce bycatch, protect habitat, and to maximize sustainable, ecosystem-based fishery management practices.
